What "REAL" faith looks like...

This is my third year teaching 2nd grade. Today we were reading our Scholastic News Magazine and talking about the Wampanoag Indians. Our key word was traditions. So, to make learning authentic, we segued to a discussion about our Christmas traditions (all the children celebrated Christmas). For the first time, in a long time, I was convinced there was a Santa Claus. I have never seen such sincere faith in the eyes of 7 and 8 year old children. The discussion covered all the details that were included to prepare for Santa Claus and his reindeer. The children shared stories about how they heard Santa Claus on their roof last year. Some children could hear Santa Claus coming down their chimney. One child said that they had to leave their doors unlocked because they didn't have a chimney. My favorite story came from one of the brightest children in the room, even though ALL my children are "gifted" in some way, he said, "We live in an apartment and we don't have a chimney. But, we don't leave any doors or windows unlocked. It just amazes me that Santa Claus has come every year!"

The entire discussion was a breath of fresh air from GOD. I so often get disillusioned with church/organized religion. Church can become all about control, programs, etc. My 2nd graders reminded me what "real faith" looks like and sounds like. I have never felt the unconditional love that I feel from my 2nd graders anywhere in my life, except from my pets. These children only want to love and be loved. They never abandon you or deliver ultimatums. They never expect you to act a certain way or they stop loving you. It is the purest form of unconditional love. A true extension of God's love on this earth. I am so blessed to be a teacher.
